OVID IS ONLY ABOUT 30 MILES FROM PALMYRA, WHERE JOSEPH SMITH RECEIVED THE VISION IN THE SACRED GROVE WHERE GOD THE FATHER AND JESUS CHRIST MADE THEIR APPEARANCE TO HIM AT AGE 14.

TUNIS RECEIVED HIS PATRIARCHAL BLESSING FROM THE HANDS OF JOSEPH SMITH SR., THE FATHER OF THE PROPHET JOSEPH. TUNIS WAS ONE OF THE 70 CALLED TO BUILD THE KIRKLAND TEMPLE AND AFTER ITS COMPLETION HE WAS GIVEN A SPECIAL BLESSING BY THE PROPHET JOSEPH, AS WERE THE 70. TUNIS WAS VERY DILIGENT IN THE TEMPLE'S CONSTRUCTION AND WAS REGARDED AS BEING VALIANT IN COMPLETING HIS ASSIGNMENTS IN A VERY POOR AND DIFFICULT TIME FOR THE SAINTS. TUNIS WAS MARRIED TO LOUISA ELIZABETH CUTLER ON JANUARY 17, 1836 BY THE PROPHET JOSEPH SMITH, IN THE PROPHET'S HOME AFTER A SACRAMENT MEETING. TUNIS AND LOUISA'S CHILDREN WERE BORN IN VARIOUS TOWNS AND STATES THAT FOLLOW THE CHURCH'S MOVEMENTS AND MIGRATIONS. NO RECORD THAT I HAVE INDICATES THAT TUNIS HELPED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NAUVOO TEMPLE; I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT HIS FAITHFUL HANDS WERE DILIGENTLY INVOLVED. HIS FATHER IN LAW, ALPHEUS CUTLER, WAS IN CHARGE OF ITS CONSTRUCTION. TUNIS AND LOUISA WERE AT THE DEDICATION OF THE KIRTLAND TEMPLE AND WITNESSED THE SPIRITUAL OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY GHOST INCLUDING THE PRESENCE OF ANGELS AND OTHER HEAVENLY BEINGS. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT THIS SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE WAS ONLY ONE OF MANY EVIDENCES THAT GAVE AUTHENTICITY TO THE REALITY OF JESUS CHRIST RESTORING HIS CHURCH TO THE EARTH. THEIR TESTIMONIES WERE STRONG AND THEIR LIVES WERE FAITHFUL TO THE END, IN SPITE OF THE MANY TRAGEDIES, SUFFERINGS AND HARDSHIPS THEY FACED THROUGHOUT ALL OF THE PERSECUTION, POVERTY AND LOSS OF FAMILY THAT THIS VALIANT COUPLE EXPERIENCED. TUNIS RAPPLEYE RECEIVED HIS TEMPLE ORDINANCES IN THE NAUVOO TEMPLE ON DECEMBER 20, 1845 ALONG WITH 94 OTHER SAINTS. LOUISA RECEIVED HER TEMPLE ORDINANCES ON DECEMBER 29, 1845 WITH 10 OTHER SISTERS, INCLUDING WIVES OF MANY OF THE APOSTLES.
7 YEAR WAGON TRAIN CALLING (MISSION) (1847 TO 1853)-
NO ONE KNOWS THE GREAT SACRIFICE THAT TUNIS EXPERIENCED IN FULFILLING THIS SPECIAL CALLING GIVEN TO HIM BY THE PROPHET BRIGHAM YOUNG. FOR 7 LONG YEARS HE BROUGHT THE SAINTS ON WAGON TRAINS FROM COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA TO THE GREAT SALT LAKE AND RETURNED TO COUNCIL BLUFFS WITH THE SAME WAGON TRAIN EACH YEAR. IS THERE ANY QUESTION THAT TUNIS HAD GAINED A "STRONG" TESTIMONY OF THE RESTORATION OF THE GOSPEL AND UNDERSTOOD THE PRINCIPLE OF "CHARITY" AND "SERVICE" TO OTHERS. WHAT MORMAN PIONEER DO WE KNOW THAT HAD GREATER WORKS?
A GREAT SADNESS-
HAVING LOST 3 CHILDREN DURING EARLIER MIGRATIONS WITH THE CHURCH, IN 1853 TUNIS BROUGHT LOUISA AND THEIR 5 CHILDREN ON HIS FINAL WAGON TRAIN TREK TO SALT LAKE. LOUISA AND THE CHILDREN HAD BEEN PATIENTLY LIVING IN IOWA WHILE TUNIS FINISHED HIS MISSION IN BRINGING SAINTS TO UTAH. ON THIS FINAL TREK, LOUISA WAS WITH CHILD AND SOON AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO EDWIN IN FEBRUARY OF 1854, COMPLICATIONS SET IN AND SHE PASSED ON INTO THE SPIRIT WORLD- (MARCH 9, 1854). AS WE LOOK TO OUR GREAT PIONEER HERITAGE, MAY WE SEARCH OUR HEARTS AND FULFILL OUR CALLINGS AND MISSIONS WITH THE SAME DILIGENCE AND SELFLESSNESS AS THOSE WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE US.
BRIGHAM YOUNG'S GREAT HEART-
AFTER THE TRAGIC ENDING OF A GREAT MISSION, THE PROPHET TOOK TUNIS UNDER HIS WING AND LET HIM CARE FOR HIS GARDENS, WHILE REARING HIS YOUNG CHILDREN- (3 YEARS).
HEALING AND MARRIAGE-
AFTER 8 YEARS TUNIS MARRIED ANN STAPLES (HOOPER), AN ENGLISH WOMAN. THEY HAD 3 CHILDREN, TWO OF WHICH DIED IN THEIR INFANCY.
OTHER CALLINGS-
TUNIS WAS CALLED TO SERVE ANOTHER MISSION TO THE EASTERN STATES FOR THE LDS CHURCH. TUNIS WAS CALLED TO HELP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW SETTLEMENT JUST IN THE KANOSH AREA (SOUTH OF FILLMORE), WHERE HE WAS ENGAGED IN FARMING IN THE LATER YEARS OF HIS LIFE. MANY OF HIS CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES SETTLED IN THE SAME AREA WITH THEIR FATHER WHICH IS STRONG EVIDENCE OF THE EVERLASTING LOVE THAT EXISTED IN THEIR FAMILY.
A TESTIMONY OF THE RESTORED CHURCH AND TEMPLE WORK-
WHILE IN HIS LAST YEARS, TUNIS RAPPLEYE TRAVELED 150 MILES BY HORSE OR WAGON TO THE TEMPLE IN SAINT GEORGE TO COMPLETE THE TEMPLE WORK OF THIS FAMILY AND HIS ANCESTORS. IS IT ANY WONDER THAT TUNIS KNEW THAT JOSEPH SMITH WAS A PROPHET OF GOD AND THAT JOSEPH SMITH TRULY HAD RECEIVED THE KEYS OF TEMPLE ORDINANCES FROM THE ANCIENT PROPHET "ELIJAH", ON ASSIGNMENT FROM GOD AND JESUS CHRIST FROM THE HEAVENS. IT IS QUITE APPARENT THAT TUNIS HAD A GREAT KNOWLEDGE OF THE THINGS OF GOD, EVEN BEYOND THE DIRECT TESTIMONIES OF THE PROPHET JOSEPH SMITH, THE PROPHET BRIGHAM YOUNG AND OTHER CLOSE ASSOCIATES. WE MAY EVEN ASSUME THAT TUNIS AND LOUISA HAD UNDERSTOOD AND FOLLOWED THE CHALLENGE THAT WE ALL FACE IN RESPECT TO GAINING A PERSONAL TESTIMONY "DIRECTLY FROM GOD" AS TO THE RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS- (STATED IN MORONI CHAPTER 10 VERSE 4 OF THE BOOK OF MORMON).
FINAL RESTING PLACE-
TUNIS PASSED ON-- DECEMBER 25, 1883 AT THE AGE OF 76. THAT WAS CONSIDERED A VERY LONG LIFE FOR A MAN IN HIS TIME. BURIED AROUND HIM AND NOT FAR FROM HIS GRAVE, ARE MANY OF HIS CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. TUNIS'S GRAVESTONE IS ALMOST TOTALLY DESTROYED AND NO OTHER GRAVESTONE IN THE ENTIRE CEMETERY IS IN NEED OF SO MUCH REPAIR- (BROKEN INTO 3 PIECES). IS IT ANY WONDER THAT THE LORD MAY JUST HAVE PLANNED IT THIS WAY-- THAT WE MIGHT ONCE AGAIN REMEMBER OUR MAGNIFICENT PIONEER HERITAGE AND THE GREAT MEN AND WOMEN IN OUR OWN FAMILY LINEAGE, WHO HAVE SO VALIANTLY SERVED THE ALMIGHTY GOD.
